Québec has recently suspended the possibility of using this mechanism.
Therefore, until June 25, 2026, it will no longer be possible for family members to submit a sponsorship application from Québec.
However, it is still possible to prepare your application for a family reunion in order to minimize the delays and be reunited with your loved ones as fast as possible.
In this article, JuriGo explains what to expect during a family reunification in Québec in 2026!
Is It Possible To Submit A Sponsorship Application In Québec?
It is currently not possible to submit a sponsorship application to bring a relative to Québec. Indeed, the maximum number of applications has been reached for sponsoring the following people:
- A spouse,
- A partner, or
- A dependent child of at least 18 years old.
Consequently, it is no longer possible to submit an application until June 2026. You will therefore have to wait until the end of the suspension period before submitting a new application.
If you decide to still submit an application, it will be automatically refused and you will have paid the fees for nothing. In other words, there is no point in trying your luck and sending in an application.
Did You Know? As for the other members of your family, it will still be possible to apply for a family reunion.
Your application was returned? In that case, you will still be able to submit a new application when the new intake period opens
Why Is There A Suspension Of Family Reunion?
In 2024, the government reduced the number of people who would be admitted to Québec through family reunification. For the period from June 26, 2024, to June 25, 2026, Québec has accepted around 13,000 people, which is 11,000 fewer than in the 2021-2023 period.
Although family reunion is a Federal program, this limit only applies in Québec. If you are in Ontario or in the rest of the country, it is still possible to submit a sponsorship program.

What Are The Exceptions To The Suspension?
Not all sponsorship applications are prohibited until June 2026. Indeed, it will be possible to submit an application if the person you wish to bring and join you is:
- A dependent child under 18 years old,
- A minor child the applicant wishes to adopt,
- An orphaned minor who is the applicant’s brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild, or
- An adult dependent child who relies on the applicant due to their physical or mental condition.
Suppose your application aims at adding a child (or a spouse) to a person targeted by a sponsorship under a pending permanent residence admission. In that case, it will also be excluded from the suspension.
Are Other Permits Available?
Absolutely! Although sponsorship is no longer available, all other permits (and visas) remain available. It is therefore important to verify whether you qualify for other visas. The most popular are the following:
- Study permit,
- Post-graduation work permit, and
- Work permit.
Regardless of the permit you seek, it is crucial to verify the eligibility criteria and conditions to obtain it. Each permit has a different purpose. Therefore, you are not necessarily eligible for any of these.

How To Prepare For The Next Sponsorship Period?
If you want to prepare for the next family reunification period, the best thing to do is to gather the documents required to submit a sponsorship application.
First, you will need to complete the Undertaking Application – Family Reunification form. If someone has co-signed the application with you, they must also complete the form in question.
It is important to answer all questions concerning the person you wish to sponsor and provide the requested documents:
- Proof of eligibility from the government or an invitation to apply,
- Proof of your address in Québec,
- Proof of the sponsor’s identity,
- Proofs of identity (sponsored persons),
- Proof of the family relationship with the sponsored person,
- Permanent Selection Application – Family Reunification category, and
- Payment of the fees for reviewing your application.
It is possible that you need additional documents depending on your situation. Nonetheless, the full list of documents is found directly on the form that you will have to fill in order to apply.
You will also have to complete the Authorization for the Collection and Communication of Personal Information form. This document is required if you have experienced a separation (or a divorce) or if you have children from a previous relationship.
You will also need to complete the financial capacity assessment form. At that stage, you should have all the necessary evidence to demonstrate that you have the means to sponsor someone.
Once you have all the documents, make sure to put aside a bit of money in order to cover the costs of your application. Here is what to expect for the next year:
| Review | Cost |
|---|---|
| Sponsorship of 1 person | $328.00 |
| Each additional sponsored person | $132.00/person |
These fees have to be paid in Canadian currency and are non-refundable, even if your application is refused.
